UPS delivered my printed Owners Manuals for my 2012 Grand Cherokee and my mother's 2011 Compass today along with the users guide for the 730N which is almost 1/2' thick. The owners manuals are much thicker than they used to be.
For those of you who aren't aware, the original owner of the vehicle can receive printed manuals free of charge by request by simply calling the Jeep owners line. It would have been nice to have received the 730N manual when I purchased the Jeep in December since I've almost figured everything out by trial and error by now, but it's still nice to have. And all manuals are available online at: I also ordered and received my paper manuals a few months ago. And as you stated, the 2' thick owners manual is a hoot, and almost unusable it is so thick. So thick that they shipped my manuals in two separate packages with the owner's manual in a box. I got all excited thinking it was some parts I ordered.dang.just that manual I asked for.
I downloaded the pdf's from the link above, and actually use them more because they are easier to search. When I find what I am looking for, I will often get my paper copy and sit down to review it in more detail. Have, several times, no service information on any WK2 (2011-or 2012) is authorized for purchase by owners (service departments have access so it exists). Am slowly gathering bits and pieces of information (have about 95 MB so far) but is very slow. Is the first vehicle I have ever owned (including new ones) that the owner has not been able to buy a service manual. My Reatta forum even has the factory service manuals available on line with GM permission. Know CJ claims the owner does not need one while under warrenty but does not help if no dealer is near & personally do not like losing hours or a day waiting for a dealer when it is a five minute job.
Factories never put a value on owner's time. At least with the OBD-II software normal things are easy.
Mostly I just find the lack of a service manual annoying. Helps that I really like the WK2 so will keep plodding away until my library is complete. Am actually finding a lot from government sources - they won't buy a car without a service manual & is interesting seeing how a police Charger uses the Pentastar.
Well Padgett, again, two paragraphs for a 2 sentence answer. THe reason the service manual is not available is that it is software based.
They do not have printed manuals anymore that may or may not be updated with the most relative information. Many large manufacturers are doing this so that their service techs always have the best info available.
When I needed torgue specs for my 2011, I went to the dealer, saw the shop foreman and he gladly printed off the information I needed. He said if I needed anything to just stop by and ask, He would be happy to print off what I needed. Maybe its all in how you guys ask??? I don't know. Lot of horror stories out there about dealers that piss in your corn flakes.
I have two with a half hour that go out of their way to help out. Again, ask nicely.they may turn out to be very helpful. I did and they were very responsive, received a number of manuals (oddly there was not one for Uconnect or my 130 radio). Problem is that they are owners manuals, not service and unlike some I have had, do not have instructions for decarbonizing the heads. What this means is that if you need to replace the fuse for the backup lights (M-31, 20A yellow) it is good but if you need to know how to change a backup light bulb, 'visit your authorized dealer or refer to the appropriate service manual' (page 617, OM 5th ed) Right. This is what is so frustrating.
Now if they won't sell me one, I am acquiring lots of notes (to replace a liftgate driver's side backup light bulb, carefully pop off the six lower trim clips with a plastic trim pry bar - the two green clips are longer. When the bottom is loose, then the four top clips can be gently popped, backup light bulb is a 921 and the wiring (on mine at least) is power:white with a green stripe and ground:black) and will eventually acquire enough information. For reassenbly be careful to realign the inner plastic surround for the flipper window lock. Meanwhile if enough people complain, something may happen. Ps scary part is that you cannot shut the engine off in Reverse (pushing the button does nothing which should be in big bold letters somewhere and normally the engine must be running to get into reverse (curiously if you hold the start button down for two seconds AND the vehicle is moving over 5 mph it will shut down but not when stopped.
This is mentioned on page 416 of the OM). So for one person to safely check the backup lights (on level ground or in garage only). 1) remove the rubber liner from the console rear cupholder 2) pop off the circular plastic plug (do not use a fingernail, the plug is stronger than mine.) 3) apply e-brake HARD 4) put ignition in RUN with engine off 5) push the pink button and move shifter to R 6) check backup lights 7) move shifter back to Park and reassemble console. Please do not try with engine running and in gear.
